The Shannon Region is located in the Midwest of Ireland. With the breath-taking coastline of the Wild Atlantic Way on it’s doorstep, the region sits on the very edge of the Western world. Proud to be part of the Emerald Isle, the Shannon Region has no shortage of both greenery and green initiatives. We’re home to Ireland’s only two carbon neutral hotels. In 2020, Limerick was awarded the European Green Leaf. Limerick and Clare both feature in the Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index). The GDS-Index is a collaborative business initiative created to help Destinations, Convention Bureaux, Event Planners and Suppliers drive the adoption and recognition of sustainable practices in their regions and in the global events industry. We are constantly striving to innovate and improve on new ways to be greener than before pushing to bring sustainability to the forefront of our industry and at the heart of what we do.


Carbon Neutral Hotel The fabulous Falls Hotel and Spa situated in the beautiful Cliffs of Moher and Burren UNESCO Geopark is leading the way towards a greener future and have been working towards this for several years now. They were thrilled to receive their GreenMark Carbon Neutral12 Cert from Green Hospitality Ireland. They are the first hotel in the country to generate their own electricity through hydro power from the river that runs alongside the hotel, this combined with the planting of hundreds of trees on the grounds of the hotel, changing over to BioLPG gas along with many other initiatives have reduced the hotels carbon emissions by 90% in five years.


Fitzgeralds Woodlands House Hotel & Spa a family run 4 star hotel on 40 acres of private organic grounds in the historic village of Adare are trailblazers when it comes to investing in environmental initiatives that reduce the resort’s carbon footprint. The resort has its own well and waste-water treatment plant on-site, which means it is entirely self-sufficient. An organic garden was created in the grounds of the hotel to supply the kitchen with the freshest and most natural ingredients possible. Shortly after the land was converted into a certified organic farm, produce from Mary’s Organic Garden and the farm can be found on the breakfast table, in a host of dishes at Timmy Macs Bistro, as drink ingredients and garnishes served in Dicks Bar and as the inspiration behind Fielding’s of Adare. All food-waste is composted and used for Mary’s Organic Garden and the organic farm, both of which are home to trees planted as part of the resort’s carbon offset programme.
